They are broadly classified as ball bearings or roller bearings by the type of rolling element used, and are available in two types depending on the direction of the load being supported, as radial bearings that support radial loads, and thrust bearings that support axial loads.

Cylindrical roller bearings use rollers as the rolling elements and have a high load capacity. The rollers are guided by the ribs of the inner or outer ring. The inner and outer rings can be separated to facilitate assembly, and both can be fitted tightly.
